Top 10 Reasons not to join a church plant

The church of Christ is not a building but the people of God who gather together to worship Him and scatter into their communities to be on mission for Jesus.  Simply put, the church is God’s people living God’s way.  But, how do you choose which local church to be a part of?  In last week’s blog we looked at good motives for joining a church plant.  This week we will continue by looking at bad motives.

Top 10 reasons not to join a church plant:

1) If you’re looking for the next cool thing in town (fads fade, and we want God to use us to make a lasting impact by reaching the unchurched and the overchurched)

2) If you’re a Christian and you don’t like your current church (unfortunately, you will find reasons not to like this church too.  If God calls you to join our team, we want to help you leave your current church on good terms being sent out with us as a missionary to Chattanooga)

3) If you see a pattern in your life of being unteachable and causing problems at your church (a change of scenery won’t change your heart or sinful patterns; only Jesus can change you)

4) If you’re a consumer wanting to “go to church” 1x a week for a nice show (we are not a Sunday show, we are a community that is called to love Jesus, cultivate community and be missionaries every day of the week)

5) If you want religion (this church will be built on the radical gospel of grace)

6) If you have an agenda (we have our mission – your private agenda does not supersede it)

7) If you’re a “wolf” and want to bring division where God wants unity (the Bible calls us to protect the sheep – Acts 20:28-30)

8) If you think this will be a nice little church that stays the same size (healthy families grow, and by God’s grace, we want to grow)

9) If you think this will be easy and smooth (this will be hard and difficult; this will be a fight, a battle, and a challenging mission)

10) If you want to hold onto your comfortable life (you must lose your life to follow Christ)

The call to pick up our cross and follow Jesus is hard but well worth the cost (Mt 16:24-26).  Would you like to join us?  Every person’s situation is different, and we would love to talk with you!
